cutting edge techIn August of 1999, I began working for a non-profit organization that prided themselves on being able to operate on 10 years trailing-edge technology.  While this may have been absolutely do-able and true, it was still somewhat limiting just the same.

That is, until the lack of a technology budget pushed a young hungry tech lad past mainstream technology and into places unfamiliar to most 501(c)(3) non-profits: cutting-edge.  Unless your non-profit organization is pulling millions or billions of dollars in revenue, this isn’t the case for most.

The search for viable software necessary to compete with for-profit organizations was slim.  This young lad from nowhere made organization technology research work for him; even searching where for-profit computer techs weren’t willing to look, regarding real-world business solutions.  Yes, this took time, but paid off with massive experience, leaning into real-world, real-time, cutting-edge business technology.. for the non-profit.

Free-ware led to share-ware and share-ware led to open source software and then a entire new world opened up for non-profits and for-profits alike!  It is absolutely amazing what open source software and SaaS (Software as a Service) business models have taken every business today!  Everyone should be excited, because everyone benefits, individuals and businesses the same.

Now, in 2015, sixteen years later, a non-profit is able to easily function, using open source software (non-Microsoft) options, equal, if not better, to run their businesses without issue and freely.  The end result is launching a business forward from trailing-edge 10 years behind mainstream to cutting-edge 5 years ahead of mainstream!
